Volunteers are essential to helping Catalyst deliver support across a wide range of people and need. We currently have over 70 volunteers in different roles working as counsellors, helping with activities in the Welcome Project and supporting many other aspects of our work throughout Surrey.
We could not achieve what we do without their support. Some of our volunteers are people who have engaged with our services and want to have the opportunity to support other people in similar circumstances. And for some it can be the way move towards a return to employment.
Whatever the reasons for volunteering, Catalyst offers support and training where appropriate.
All volunteers with Catalyst will need to be open to supervision which is an opportunity to discuss their progress – this is very much a two way process to ensure volunteers enjoy their time with us. There is also a requirement that volunteers complete an enhanced DBS check and attend mandatory free training such as safeguarding children and adults.
There is a Volunteer Group co-ordinator who offers a point of contact for volunteers from different locations and a regular Volunteer Newsletter.
Volunteering Roles with Catalyst
Catalyst are always looking for people who want to commit to helping us further our aims in a reliable way. Opportunities include:
A Novel Idea Bookshop
This thriving bookshop in Godalming needs volunteers to be able to commit to at least one 3 hour shift per week. Tasks include sorting donations, stocking shelves and being comfortable dealing with queries from the public, receiving money and supporting customers.
We need support with meeting and greeting people visiting Catalyst, dealing with telephone calls, filing and database entry. The role is as part of a team and there would be support and training to develop skills.
Work with The Welcome Project
Do you have the skills to help people stay well in Waverley? We are looking for volunteers who would be able to commit to at least a couple of hours on a regular basis to support individuals to access a range of activities (art, music, drama, craft and groups looking at confidence, anxiety and depression). Volunteers with new skills and ideas are always needed. Read more about The Welcome Project.
Most of our volunteer counsellors are on placement with Catalyst whilst studying to qualify. Many stay on for 2 or 3 years to consolidate experience and to accrue hours for accreditation. We also have a number of qualified counsellors who volunteer for 2 to 3 hours per week. We provide ongoing training at a small cost. Our approach isn’t exclusively CBT and we need counsellors to be able to work with deep-rooted issues as well as the substance use. Read more about Reach Out Counselling.
